About Chris O'Brien Lifehouse
Chris O'Brien Lifehouse is an independent, not-for-profit cancer hospital. It provides a full range of cancer care including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and supportive care. The purpose-built facility houses 125 beds, including 6 ICU beds, 8 operating theatres, 5 linear accelerators and 44 treatment space in the day therapy suite. Lifehouse provides services to private patients across the full range of specialties including robotic and minimally invasive surgery. In addition, services are provided to public patients in the specialties of breast surgery, head and neck surgery, gynaecologic oncology, radiation oncology and medical oncology.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the position of visiting medical officer in the breast surgery department at the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse. The clinical staff of the department comprises a total of three senior medical staff, a clinical fellow, registrar and resident, and two clinical nurse consultants. The approach to treatment is a multidisciplinary one and there is close collaboration with the medical and radiation oncologists at Lifehouse, pathologists and radiologists from Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and allied health staff including psychologists, dietitians and physiotherapists.
The successful applicant will have access to 1 public operating session per week. It is expected that they will also use the facilities at Lifehouse to care for their private patients. They will also participate in the breast multidisciplinary meeting and clinic, and play an active role in the quality and research activities of the unit. Limited clinical activity may occur at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, in order to support the Obstetric Unit located there, but there will be no dedicated operating lists allocated for this and no admission rights to RPAH.
Selection Criteria

  • Registered as a medical practitioner with AHPRA, as a general surgeon with a sub-specialty interest in breast surgery
  • Full accreditation with BreastSurgANZ
  • Specialty training in breast oncoplastic surgery
  • Completion of a higher degree
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to work as a member of a team
  • Understanding of and experience in quality improvement within healthcare


  • Established practice in breast surgery
  • Track record of clinical or laboratory research with associated publications
  • Experience in administration in the health care setting
