Our Credit Operations Acceptance Team is responsible in assessing and processing all Card and Mortgage applications, plus variations from submission to final settlement. The team works closely with customers, brokers, mortgage specialists and internal stakeholders and key vendors to provide seamless service fulfilment. The team operates onshore and multiple offshore sites.
The Head of Underwriting will lead the Credit Acceptance Team for Secured and Unsecured Products (New to Bank and Existing customers) so as to facilitate the achievement of departmental 'operational' objectives. A primary responsibility is to lead a high-performing Underwriting Team and providing expert advice and assistance across the end-to-end application processing. Fostering and maintaining strong internal and external relationships with the vendors and business partners to achieve common goals is also integral to the success of this position and team. Reporting to the Head of Credit Acceptance, this management role requires strong leadership skills and a solid level of underwriting and process experience.

Key Accountabilities:
Lead a team of high-performing Underwriters including Team Managers
Sign off loans over $2.5M to $4M
Monitor and manage workflows on a daily basis ensuring agreed service standards are met and/or exceeded
Custodian of Global Exception cap and to ensure that this not Breached
Main contact point for 5% of the top Aggregators Nationally
Develop and implement an effective training strategy for all underwriters
Assist in develop others by imparting knowledge across the broader team
Liaise with Risk Management to recommend, review and implement credit policies
Support the Sales Team through advising on application scenarios and strengthening knowledge on policy and process
Optimise resource management via proactive capacity review/planning to ensure resources are fully utilised and allocated according to operational needs
Assist with departmental and business unit controls including but not limited to policies and procedures, control function check lists for Approvals
Provide expert advice and/or direct operational support in relation to the credit approval process
Provide superior service to customers both internal and external (inclusive of the handling of 'escalated' customer problems/complaints), in order to build relationships and rapport
Demonstrate advanced problem solving skills, ideally acquired in a credit operational environment
Identify and isolate deficiencies in relation to current processes and/or procedures
Comprehensively explore/examine opportunities to undertake positive process re-engineering, so as to maximise process efficiency/effectiveness and further develop the Credit Approvals business unit
Follow relevant 'best practice' standards/methodologies in the development of effective solutions that integrate into overall strategies
As a key stakeholder, assist with the enhancement, development and implementation of management information systems
Complete, maintain and critically review/interpret MIS and documentation in relation administrative functions so as to develop and communicate strategic recommendations to management with a view to enabling the adoption of best practice methodology
Demonstrate advanced verbal and written communication skills (in order to deliver efficient, high levels of customer service)
Operate the Performance Management System to improve staff satisfaction and increase effectiveness - Undertake assessment of staff performance levels in accordance with performance management processes
Complete Performance Management documents and conduct reviews
Motivate and influence team to ensure a high level of commitment to the department and Bank's objectives
Support Business in achieving high NPS and in VOE survey
Sign off on all exceptions under own delegation
Recommendations to Risk/Region for loan applications above own delegation
Responsible for internal/external Audits
Responsible for implementation of regulatory requirements
Undertake Broker visitations Nationally and attend Mortgage Business Seminars Requirements:

Credit Underwriting experience mandatory
A minimum of 5 years management experience in a financial services operational environment, with a strong background in Change Management
Proven record in successfully leading a team, and a passion for coaching and people development
An advance understanding of Credit Methodology is highly desirable
Advanced organisational and time management skills - The ability to manage time and work flow in a high volume operational environment displaying attention to detail
Highly motivated and pro-active individual who is able to work under pressure
Show insight into the motivations and needs of others
Facilitate team collaboration within and across business units
Must be adaptable to change and constantly seek opportunities to improve process
Excellent Communication skills both written and verbal
A lateral ('big picture') thinker
