    About the Role

    CareWest's out of home care services provide support, care and a safe environment for young people with a disability and/or complex and challenging behaviours. We are currently seeking casual Youth Support Workers to provide support and personal development including the development of life-skills, recreational/leisure activities and education to meet the individual needs of young people living in our out of home care accommodation services.

    Some key accountabilities of the role include:
    • Advocating for the rights of the young person as necessary both within CareWest and in engaging with other services, organisations and individuals in the wider community
    • Ensuring that support provided is appropriate to the needs of the young person and community
    • Creation of a positive, safe and healing relationships and experiences informed by a sound understanding of trauma and developmental needs
    • Participate in the day to day operations of the residence which includes responding to the young person's emotional and functional needs, the development of their personal skills and all administrative and household duties
    • Ensure an environment that provides a sense of safety, structure, acceptance and security for the young person and staff
    • Ensuring that the young person's rights and interests are protected at all times
    • Act as an effective role model
    • Exhibit empathy for the young people
    • Creating a therapeutic care environment implementing positive approaches

    Selection Criteria:
    • Certificate III in Community Services or related field or the willingness to obtain in the first 12 months of employment
    • Demonstrated experience in the provision of care and support to young people in out of home care
    • The ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including computer skills
    • A commitment to supporting and promoting the individual needs, strengths and personal goals of young people
    • Demonstrated experience working with challenging behaviours
    • Ability to advocate, engage and negotiate with relevant stakeholders including family and educational networks where appropriate
    • Good problem solving and conflict management skills
    • Current First Aid certificate
    • Current Drivers Licence
    • Flexibility and availability to work across a varying roster providing support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
    It would be desirable if you also have:
    • A clear understanding of a therapeutic setting
    You will also be required to:
    • Pass a National Criminal History Check
    • Provide us with a current NSW Working with Children Check
    • Pass a pre-employment medical assessment, including drug and alcohol screening
